UQ Market Day 2012 has been a major success for the UQAFC Red Lions. Attracting students to play AFL for one of the fastest growing clubs within the South-East Queensland region is fundamental to the club’s long term goals. A terrific turn out of current players from across the club worked hard all day to answer the questions of fresh new faces to the campus eager to play.
Over 50 students expressed their interest in being able to train and play for the Red Lions this year. Experienced players from all over Australia including North and Central Queensland, Victoria, South and Western Australia are looking to join the club. Local players also have decided to join the Red Lions to coincide with their studies at UQ. In a massive vote of confidence for the club’s plans for the future of AFL on campus, over 30 Under 18 players have shown keen interest in representing the University of Queensland AFC.
And it’s not just about the boys. With the great assistance of Anna O’Keefe, the club has been approached by 15 ladies expressing interest in starting a Red Lions Ladies team. Following the success of many of the other Tier 1 clubs on campus, the club recognizes the addition of a ladies side to compete in the local Brisbane competition is well overdue and an important opportunity for UQ students. Congratulations to Anna and the team for their efforts today.
The UQAFC’s success today is due to the tireless work of the club’s volunteers. A massive thanks to players Anthony Newberry, Hugh Milikan, Jimmy Day, Ross Wilkinson, Sean Maxwell, Sean Powyer, Alex Foulstone, Nick Foxcroft, Michael Stewart, Prof Ross Barnard and Coaches Tim MacKinley and Quentin Johnson for their dedication and time to help out the club today. Warren J. Derrick has been fundamental in making the day a success. Many thanks to Waz for his efforts in preparing for the day, setting up the stall and recording the action.
