With only 17 starters and a full squad of determined Jimboomba Redbacks, the UQAFC Bulldogs put in a stunning performance Sunday afternoon to register their first win of the season.
Rallying behind inspirational skipped Jared DeRosa, the outsized and undermanned Bulldogs were never outsmarted and continually found ways to goal. Foster bagged 5 and Lees 3 in a win that looked a formality at half time with the Bulldogs up by 5 goals. After an impressive rebound by Jimboomba in the third term, the boys started the final quarter 2 goals down and run out the game superbly to register a 3 goal margin at the close.
Bolstered with the support of Wests Junior U16’s Foster, Rosen, Watson and Mundie, the squad constantly denied Jimboomba possession and kept their head over the ball to kick clear to running team mates. The handballing under pressure, passing by foot and long range goal kicking were a highlight and impressed Div 2 Senior Coach Tim MacKinley who had watched his own group dismantle Wynnum the day before. The decision making and hard running to provide options clearly demonstrated the ability and fitness of the group while disciplined, energetic tackling kept the Redbacks easy possessions to a minimum. Several late free kicks through effective tackling enabled the Bulldogs to press forward regularly resulting in the emphatic win.
Congratulations to all the boys for a terrific win and the clubs genuine thanks to the WJAFC lads who backed up for the Bulldogs after their morning fixtures. UQAFC Bulldogs 15.11.101 def Jimboomba Redbacks 12.11.83. UQAFC Best DeRosa, Astlidge, McLean, Foster, Cusack, Stephens
