The UQ Red Lions Division 1 sides today achieved something not seen at the club for decades.
Having defeated Caloundra in the Reserves and Coorparoo in the Seniors, the Red Lions now have both Seniors and Reserves going in as favourites into the 2011 State Association Division 1 Grand Finals.

This is a fantastic effort by the boys and congratulations should go to all those involved in this monumental achievement.

Thanks must also go to Peter Herring and Peter Rosengren for hosting a spectacular home final at UQ Oval 7 today. It was great to see for the first time in a long while that UQ Red Lions Supporters outnumbered the supporters of our opponents. Thanks to all who came along to watch our guys wrestle victory from their opposition.

Having won today, both teams go straight into the Grand Finals, which will both be held on Saturday the 3rd of September at O’Callaghan Park, Zillmere Road, Zillmere. Reserve Grade will play at 11:30am and Senior Grade will play at 2:15pm.

I urge everyone to get down on the day to support our guys in their pursuit of the dual Premiership, something which has not been seen at the club since 1984.

I look forward to seeing you all there.
Regards,
Scott

Well, what a start to season 2011!

I will start with by commenting on the fact that most if not all of the Red Lion ‘Magoo’s’ sides that I have known over the past five years have been in good form at the start of the season. What has been a standout with this seasons’ side so far is their ability to play as a team and implement the Division 1 game plan in a most disciplined manner.

With the Senior side also notching up consecutive wins it will be hard for Reserve grade players pushing for selection in the Seniors, to break into the winning side. However as they have understood and adapted to the game plan so well, when they get their opportunity, should their services be required, 2’s players can draw confidence in the fact that they will be able to transition into the role with ease.

Now not to get too far ahead as it is only round two, but this University side put on a fantastic display, showing attributes of team that is really starting to gel and play for each other. Right from the first bounce Uni was hard at the ball however a lucky clearance and subsequent free kick saw Aspley take the first shot at goal. The following miss-kick/shank/drop-kick went about fifteen metres and was marked by the uni defense. This was the last time the ball entered the Aspley forward line for the quarter as the Uni engine room generated an onslaught of possession to the forward line, resulting in a 7.2 to 0.0 score line going into the first break.

With the General, Anthony ‘Bixy’ Bix, the rampaging Ben ‘BK’ Kenway, pack smashing Micky Brothers in the midfield sharing the clearances and Aiden Ryan floating across half forward, the Uni full forward line opened up a playground to create their scoring options. As best on ground Chris, ‘Burgo’ Burgess was keen to get onto the ball and into the Ruck, Uni was able to push Stephen ‘Dolly’ Parton into full forward and together with 2008 Reserve grade Premiership player and club Best & Fairest, Jarrod ‘Prackers’ Prakelt they shared a nine goal bag for the day. Prackers kicked five and Dolly slotted four of his own.

Forward line pressure and a disciplined field structure orchestrated by the entire back line under the careful watch of Captain, Co-coach Darren ‘Harvs’ Harvey and 1000 game veteran Ross ‘Rossy’ Stewart gave Uni almost 100% possession in the first quarter. Emerging leader Anthony ‘Ninja’ Newberry also kept the Red Lions focused with his voice out of the back pocket and Dave Doherty along with Remy Kurz were the solid spine of the backline at Full Back and Centre Half back respectively. The display of composure around the ground was that of a team without opposition. Uni’s run was unstoppable with Ben ‘Harro’ Harrison on the wing and Rowan ‘Smithy’ Smith off the Half Back Flank, just starting to warm up, daylight was their only competition for the ball. Nick ‘Maysey’ Mayes continued to improve his work rate switching between the wing and half back. All he needs to do now is learn to accept umpire’s decisions when they are made – they never change their mind mate – and his game will only continue to improve.

Two significant events took place at Quarter time. One had a short term and the other had a long term affect on the game.

The first significant event was the high decibel spray the Aspley coach gave his scoreless players. Apsley responded early in the second Quarter and awoke from their hibernation to score two early goals. Whether Uni got a little complacent or we were still recovering from their first quarter onslaught, some quick breaks through the lines showed how easy the game can turn, when your mind switches off. This alluded to the importance of playing four quarters of football as games can easily be lost due to a short lapse in concentration.

Uni took this opportunity to rotate some of its hardworking players from the first Quarter and gave some fresh legs a run at the ball. Uni also took its first hit of the day losing prominent ball winner BK with a hyper-extended knee. Second gamer for the Division 1, Reserve Grade side Michael ‘Mick’ Pembroke slotted into the midfield and continued where BK left off, putting his body on the line in the contest and winning the hard ball. The coaching staff can only praise Mick for his efforts in stepping up to Division 1 from Division 2 and has gone above and beyond expectation with the job he’s been asked to do.

The other significant event that took place at Quarter time which had the long term affect on the game was the late arrival of teenage first gamer Blaine Coates. Blain was asked by the skipper to show the team why it was worth the wait and the young charge didn’t disappoint. With Smithy and Harro already running circles around the opposition, Blain was able to cut loose and was devastating with his hard running, contested marks and delivery into the forward line. As a coach it is great to have these young keen competitors in the side, but I have a feeling he will be pushing for senior selection shortly.

With the ear piercing rant from the Aspley coach fading in the distance along with the affect it had on his players, Uni was able to regain its forward pressure with multiple second and third efforts from its crumbing small forwards led by 2008 Premiership goal sneak Ronan Lynch, debutant James ‘Jimmy’ Patmore and last weeks crowd pleaser Matty ‘Jr’ Wray. Ronan is always great at finding the footy and creating space but last week saw him a little under done with regards to his timing and match fitness. This week, Ronan’s return to form along with his outstanding defensive pressure and his ability to be at the fall of the ball saw him gather a handy little three goal bag, all the while ignoring some physical sledging from clueless Aspley bogans almost a foot taller than him. Don’t fire up someone who is already on fire! First gamer Jimmy followed coaches’ instructions to the letter by getting in and under and fed the runners on numerous occasions assisting in a couple of goals. Jr has grabbed each opportunity with both hands and feet and is showing maturity beyond his years by understanding and performing his role in the side.

After getting back in control halfway through the second quarter which included Burgo taking a high flying screamer in a dominating around the ground Ruck performance, Uni once again pushed forward in the third quarter. Unfortunately the forwards lost their goal kicking radar a little, kicking 3.4 to 2.0 during the term but still dominated around the ground. The only real disappointment was losing Centre Half Forward/Midfielder Aiden Ryan with a recurrence of a previous hamstring injury. Damn hamstrings! Aiden had been appointed Vice Captain for the day’s game as there was an outside tip that Captain Harvs maybe experience a violent meltdown due to last hour facility issues. Aiden was displaying one of his trademark clinical games before the tweak in the third Quarter.

With Burgo and Smithy all but rested in the last term, the players left on the field were keen to run out the final twenty minutes, pushing through the heat and exhaustion. Harvs set a very achievable task of kicking six goals in the final term to make it twenty for the day. By this stage Aspley had al but given up and the Red Lions ran and shared the ball to deliver the 20.10.130 to 5.1.31 score with ease. It was a true team win with all players staking their claims for their spots in next week’s local derby against Kenmore.

Some fine tuning of the game plan and our skills at this weeks training sessions will put the side in a great position for he next test at Kenmore on Saturday 9th of April who had a surprising win against our all time rivals Yeronga/South Brisbane last week.

With Kenmore having a prominent home crowd, Harvs and I are hoping the Red Lions Reserves can show some extended club spirit and make plans to stick around after our game to support the Seniors and help them to make it three from three for the season, in the local derby.
