Red Lions Old Boys Day
A wrap up of the 2010 Old Boys Day written by Anthony “Doggy” Lee:
Bright sunshine and a firm and dry field ensured there were no excuses that could be used by the old boys in the “main game” of the day at 10.45am – the old boys game.
The game was played in high spirits. The rules of the day consisted of a few simple rules in contrast to modern day football – kicks must be sent to a contest, any team kicking the ball backwards twice in a row was penalised and switching the ball outlawed. This meant that all old boys understood the game based on 1980’s “purist” football.
There was a real mix of ages and talent on display. The tussle between Andy Dunstan and Doc Eggar showed they both had not lost their skills which saw them taking some fine grabs over each other. It did appear however that they were taking it in turns to look good – cunning plan.
Lewe Atkinson moved into the ruck against Leon Bowers, both players being 5 feet nothing in height, made this a great battle in the middle of the park. It did make it easy for other players to come in for the third man up in the ruck which was achieved without jumping.
The game was played in great spirit and it’s a credit to all involved. Footy and the Red Lions were really the winners on the day.
The goal kicking competition consisted of three kicks each – the first from an acute angle, the second from 45 degrees and the third from straight in front either on weaker foot or drop kick. Some of the guys showed that they hadn’t lost any skills whilst others showed that they never had those skills to begin with.
In a tight competition the winner was David Chettle using his mongrel punts of one step. Thanks to Chetts in donating half the prize – bottle of bundy – back to the club.
Thanks to Old Boy and now Pineapple Cup field umpire Brad “Bezerka” Wooding for umpiring the Old Boys game – the game was made considerably more fun by having an old boy umpire that understands the culture. Thanks also to Brett Hayes for donating a brand new sherrin which was later in the day used also as a prize for the goal kicking and as well to the club for welcoming the Old Boys down.

Feedback received from Old Boy, Brett Young:
Hi Scott,
On behalf of myself, and I’m sure all of the Old Boys at Saturday’s challenge match, I would like to say “thank you” for the reception and hospitality shown to us.
Please pass on my thanks to all the current players for the support and encouragement for our match, and the sportsmanship and skill exhibited to win both of their own clashes.
I would like to put in a particular thank you to Anthony Lee, whose input and enthusiasm was instrumental in encouraging many of us along. The can bar and goal kicking contest were special highlights.
I look forward to attending as many of the Uni matches as possible. It was great to see such commitment from you all to the ongoing growth of this proud and successful club.
I look forward to catching up with you in person at the August 14 function.
Regards
Brett Young

Feedback received from Old Boy, Andy Dunstan:
Thanks for organising a great Old Fossils day Doggy. Was great to catch up again but I really have to defer to Doc taking the honours in the marking contests – just not sure how he managed to sneak those lead weights into my boots! The gauntlet is down for next year though.
Couldn’t believe the skills and speed of everyone and was very impressed with the ‘hill’ and the quality of sledging still on show. May I suggest we get an impartial outside umpire for next year so we can get the full impact of Doc’s verbal onslaught which was sadly missing – am thinking he was taking it easy on an old boy.
All for now, got to put the legs back in the ice bath.
