Historic Award For Female Footy at UQ

Breanna Koenen claimed a historic award at the recent UQ Blues Awards Dinner at Customs House where she was presented with a Half Blue by Alan Jones AO.

Blues Awards are awarded to sportsmen and sportswomen in recognition of outstanding sporting achievements and for enhancing the reputation of university sport. To be awarded a University Blue is held in high esteem and is one of the highest accolades a University athlete can receive.

There have been a limited number of Blues Awards handed out by UQ for Australian Football. Bre becomes our university’s first ever female recipient, joining a list which boasts AFL players Matthew Clarke, Andrew McKay and Luke Power.

The award caps a superb year for Bre which included the following list of accolades:

  • Queensland Women’s Team selection
  • Named in the best players in both of Queensland’s matches
  • QWAFL Team of the Year
  • UQAFC QWAFL Vice-Captain
  • UQAFC QWAFL Best & Fairest (second consecutive year)
  • Nominated for UQAFC “Red Lion of the Year”
  • Half Blue for AFL from the University of Queensland

Bre achieved all of the above whilst undertaking full time study towards a Bachelor of Physiotherapy at UQ, acting as the sports trainer for our club’s QAFA(B) & QWAFA squads, and coaching local junior footy at the Ambrose Treacy College.

Congratulations on a fantastic year Bre, the UQAFC looks forward to seeing you earn a spot on an AFL list in the near future as the league builds toward the upcoming National Women’s League.
