It was the perfect day for footy….the sun was out, the birds were chirping, the ground was soft underfoot & the boys were up & about!

It had been a long season to date with a string of injuries & a few close games just slipping away from us, but Saturday June 21 was shaping up to be the best chance of a win for the season, and the first ever at QAFL level….

It was a tight contest early as the teams adjusted to the tempo of the game & the eagle eyed umpires who were paying multiple free kicks & 50’s, but despite the Hawks kicking the 1st major of the day the Red Lions came back to head into the 1st break 2 goals up.

It was more of the same in the 2nd & 3rd terms however the Red Lions were putting together an impressive team effort, and thanks to the dynamic duo up forward with the heat seeking boot of Jarrod Prackers who had re-found his form & the backman’s nightmare in Cain Tickner, the Red Lions ran into the last break with a handy 5 goal lead after winning all 3 quarters.

The large, vocal crowd at Oval 7 were on the edge of their seats at the start of the last as they knew the 1st goal was crucial….luckily this went UQ’s way followed by a few more! The Hawks kicked a few late consolation goals but this didn’t dampen the spirits, excitement & celebration of the UQ Red lion players, coaches & supporters when the final siren sung…and what a song it was! The boys had been waiting a long time to sing their own song….and didn’t they do this well!

So well done boys! The coaches, Matt ‘Hollywood’ Stewart, Chris ‘Animal’ Burgess & Darren ‘The Nose’ Harvey, had asked for a 4 quarter effort all season & we finally delivered!

Special mention must go to Mike ‘The Mop’ Cavaye who won most of the taps & played well in the ruck all day on debut from the under 18’s along with his fellow U18’s debutants Jono & Harry who played well & held their own. Damien ‘Apex’ Hughes was a stalwart down back all day & Tom ‘The Pest’ Crameri got a lot of it & did a lot of running at half forward in a bit to streamline his sloppy rig.

As expected the celebrations kicked on into the 5th quarter at the St Lucia Bowls Club & out & about after that…..

Well done boys & thanks to all the supporters!
