A hard-fought year filled with close losses, what-ifs and fiercely competitive fixtures comes to a close on Saturday as UQ’s developing QAFL reserves side plays host to local rivals Wilston Grange at Oval 7.
Having gone close to beating Grange in preseason despite fielding an injury depleted squad, the students were disappointed to have their colours lowered by the Gorillas at Hickey Park during exams and will look to make amends in the final game of the season. Now sitting just below the Gorillas on the ladder, the ressies, under the astute leadership of coach Josh “Yogi” Hanek, can feel an upset brewing on home soil.
Expect consistent performers James Nightingale and Brenton Crilly to toil hard all day in the middle as the boys, led by former Gorilla Angus Armstrong and his brand new schnoz, look to capitalise on their opportunities through miserly half forwards Hamish “Quiche” Loraine, Oscar Dielemans and Jono “Gotham” Gorham. Look for the x-factor on the day to come from UQ’s mosquito fleet of smalls led by Alex Bateman and a swathe of talented U18s including Nicky Rosen, Dylan D’Roza and James Cowlishaw in what is sure to be a hard-fought contest to the end.
So head on down to Oval 7 to support our reserves from 11:30 or, even better, the QWAFL ladies from 9:30 and then stick around for what should be a cracking contest as the QAFL seniors look to notch up their third home win of the season at 2pm, having just dispatched a highly-fancied Western Magpies outfit in their last game at UQ.
