QAFL Round 1 Preview

It’s here, It’s finally here! The 2016 season for our QAFL teams kicks off this Saturday afternoon at Salk Oval against Palm Beach Currumbin. From late last year the playing group has been working tremendously hard to prepare for their first game and they are roaring to go. Led by Coach, Brenton Crilly, the reserves squad looks to stamp their authority on a competition which UQAFC has featured more strongly in the past and Coach Crilly dares to dream. With a squad that includes a plethora of stars such as the likes of young guns, Henry Watson, Phil Shaw and Nick Rosen, paired with some old, experienced heads such as, Reserves 2015 B’n’F winner James Day, Dave ‘Disco’ Doherty and Sean ‘Wester’ Westerhuis, Coach Crilly is beaming with the potential that the squad offers and can’t wait to give the season a red hot crack starting from this weekend.

Our senior squad, led by the evergreen, Alistair Carlson, is bursting with excitement as to what 2016 will bring for UQAFC and if the standards set during preseason is anything to go by, we are in for a BIG year!! With Coach John ‘Toots’ Tootell taking over the reigns’ for the 2016 season, the atmosphere around the senior playing group is electric and that goes for the game plan that will be on show this weekend too. Looking to take the game on and trust in the silky foot skills or our playing group, The Red Lions will dare to dream at the prospect of what can be achieved by the players. Boasting the likes of George Hannaford and Jonathan Macanawai running through the middle of the ground the forwards consisting of some stars in Harry Milford and Rhys Tagell will be licking their lips to the delivery they will be receiving all day. Furthermore, with a backline comprised of the likes of Phil Lovett and Sean ‘Pow Pow’ Powyer the whole squad looks very strong and Palm Beach will have to be on their toes if they want to curb the tide, the tide that is the Red Lions.

So get on down to Salk Oval at 12pm for the reserves and 2pm for the seniors to support The Mighty Red Lions and watch what will hopefully be to cracking wins to start the season. Goosh, Goosh, Goosh!!
