Here we go! Round 1 of the much-awaited QAFL season kicks off this Saturday!
The where: Sandgate AFC. Lemke Rd Sandgate.
The when: Colts 9am. Reserves: 11:45am. Seniors 2pm
The who: Tim “Dicky T” Mackinley takes the helm with senior coach Matt Stewart on leave. Tim has returned from a year honing his craft at QAFL rival Morningside. The QAFL coaching group is rounded out with 3 time reserve grade premiership coach Darren Harvey and last years reserves coach Chris Burgess.
Adam Culvenor has the honour of leading the first UQAFC QAFL team out onto the field. The club would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Adam on being appointed as Club Captain. We will be assisted by Vice Captain’s Michael ‘Vegas’ Stewart and Alistair ‘BGA’ Carlson.
The reserves sees the return of favourite son Josh Hanek to take the reins for the first time for premiership points. After a challenging pre-season, the twos return to something approaching full strength.
Brenton Crilly returns with the clipboard for the colts. As a great addition to the coaching roster, Great Britain coach Mark Pitura will join Brenton on the sidelines for season 2014.
Of the playing stocks we see an number of players make their Red Lion debut.
Scholarship holders Brodie Tebbett and Dustin Harris will give the team some real polish around the ground. State u18 and Lion Academy member Scott Miller is a welcome addition and George Hanniford will play from our NEAFL affiliate Aspley Hornets.
Also to debut are Tom ‘Sloppy’ Crameri, Liam ‘Dark Horse’ Williams and ‘Big’ Dan Poultney. Good luck lads!
What can we expect?
Run! Both teams are brimming with youth and temperatures around 30 degrees predicted it could come down to which team is willing to push themselves the hardest.
